南川千代さんは小説「玉撞き屋の千代さん」＝南川泰三著・集英社刊＝の主人公です。そして、作者である南川泰三氏のご母堂です。

僕は小説を読んで、岸和田でお芝居を観て、千代さんにお目にかかって、ずうずうしくも写真を撮らせて下さいとお願いをしました。撮っている時も、今も、よくもまあ千代さんは40年ぶりに、それも学生時代に独学をした程度の実績ゼロの僕に写真を撮れせてくれたものだと、彼女の度量にいくら感謝をしても感謝しきれません。千代さんの作品がなかったら僕は今も写真を続けているか疑問です。
下記は、キヤノンギャラリー梅田で個展を開いた時に書いた「作品解説」です。千代さんに感謝の念をもって改めてここに載せます。
作 品 解 説 大坂 忠
この写真の主人公は、南大阪でもっとも古い玉撞き屋である「保名（やすな）倶楽部」の経営者、南川千代さんです。店の客にも家族にも「千代さん」と呼ばれ親しまれています。千代さんは９３歳になり、店は創業６６年になります。
私は小説「玉撞き屋の千代さん」＝南川泰三著・集英社刊＝を読み、波乱万丈の、そして、「嘘を突かずに、玉を突け」と言わしめる確固たる価値観を持った千代さんの生きざまに強い感銘を受けました。
キューを握って勝負をしている千代さんやほめたり叱ったりしながら初級者に手ほどきをしている千代さん、大好きなタバコを吸い、コーヒーを飲みながら一休みをしている千代さん、家族やお客と談笑をしてくつろいでいる千代さんの表情を追ってみました。
千代さんは小柄な方です。しかし、９３年の年輪に枝葉なことには動じない大きな岩のようなものを感じました。
若干２７歳から物資が不足した戦争の時期をはさんでの今日までの６６年の長きにわたって、実質女手ひとつで玉撞き屋を経営し、４人の子供を真っ直ぐに育てた不屈な、頑固なまでの精神力に心から尊敬の念を持ちました。
そのような人間南川千代氏と向き合い、写真で表現するのに、６３歳の写真を始めて３年目足らずの自分に役不足を感じざるを得ませんでした。しかし、泰然とした千代さんは無粋な私に写真を撮る機会を与えて下さいました。心より御礼申し上げます。
おおよそ一世紀の人生経験豊かな千代さんのお人柄が多少でもお伝えできればと願っています。
About Chiyo-san
These photographs are of Chiyo Minamikawa who has been running a billiard parlor called “Yasuna Club,” which is the oldest parlor in the South Osaka district. Both the parlor’s patrons and her family members have been affectionately calling her “Chiyo-san.” She is 93 years old and the parlor has a 66-year history.
I read the book “Chiyo-san at the billiard parlor” by Taizo Minamikawa, published by Shueisha and was greatly impressed by her motto “Do not play with lies, play billiards”, which showed her firm determination and solid way of living.
I tried to capture images of Chiyo-san as if she were playing a game, encouraging and giving advice to beginners, taking breaks with her favorite coffee and cigarettes, and chatting with her family and the customers.
Chiyo-san is a small lady but I felt in her 93 years of life that her being was as solid as a mighty rock – someone who would not bat an eye over trifling matters.
She has been managing the parlor for 66 years since the age of 27, through the Second World War, when supplies were extremely short. She raised four well-disciplined children while running the parlor almost single-handedly. I feel a deep sense of reverence for her fortitude and never-say-die spirit.
Coming into contact with such a person I felt I was not quite adequate to portray her with photographs since my photography experience is limited to only three years.
However, Chiyo-san was not much concerned about my poor experience and she kindly allowed me to capture her images on three occasions in 2008. I am much obliged to her and must thank her from the heart for the opportunity.
I hope above all that the photographs will convey the warm and fascinating personality of Chiyo-san, who has lived almost a century long.
